1. What is the best accessory to complete a room?
2. How do you decide on the color scheme for the room?
Start with something that the client (you!) absolutely loves and go from there. Sometimes you just fall in love with something and you’re not sure why. But if and when you do, why not base the room around that color, finish, or texture?
3. The secret to styling a mantel?
The triangle method! Make sure your items create a triangular form (the center should hold the largest and tallest piece, and then two smaller but different shapes on the bottom left and right).
4. Designer pet peeve?
Mixing metal finishes. On some occasions it looks great, but for the most part, choose a finish and stick to it. For example, choose either all nickel or all chrome. Sometimes you can mix metals like iron and brass. But be mindful of metals that compete and don’t work well together in a space.
5. Without fail design hint that you have learned over your career?
Artwork should be hung so that the center of the piece is 57″ from the ground – unless there is a furniture piece under it. It’s the first step to help tie a space together. These elements won’t feel so disconnected from the furniture in the room. You’d be amazed at how many people have artwork that is hung way too high!
